“This is a programme which, due to the broad stylistic survey it encompasses, could with some legitimacy be entitled ‘The Four Seasons’. Only their order has been scrambled: beginning with Bach as ‘Spring’, we progress through ‘Winter’, then ‘Summer’ and end up in ‘Autumn’, the season of the Romantic era.
The so-called ‘Brahms Guitar’ that I play (and invented, together with luthier David Rubio - he it was who gave the guitar its admittedly quirky name) was in fact originally conceived as a broad ranging instrument for all ‘seasons’ of repertoire.
I play like a cellist. Not, as might easily be assumed, in order to be a surrogate cellist, but simply because the posture provides me with freedom of movement in both arms. It’s also very comfortable!”
